CBS VFX Reveals the Secrets Behind Creating Vietnam for THIS IS US

Creative director, Craig Weiss, stated:  The audience must believe they are in the moment with the actor. On the recent episode titled “Vietnam” Jack played by Milo Ventimiglia has flashbacks from the Vietnam War.  All the scenes were filmed in the Los Angeles county desert.  The challenge was to transform the dry arid desert into a lush green Vietnam jungle. The story world was created by a team of artists and the final results were indistinguishable.  We wanted to keep all the original nuances of DOP Yasu Tanida’s photography, including lens flares and all of the organic lighting subtleties.

The story world was created by a team of artists and the final results were indistinguishable.   Our construction of numerous original environments required full CG landscapes, 3D palm trees and foliage.  We wanted to keep all the original nuances of DOP Yasu Tanida’s photography, including lens flares and all of the organic lighting subtleties. The only way to maintain these organic visual cues was opt for rotoscoping versus the use of a blue screen.
